Summer 2012 Information
The Summer in Turkey class (A Creative Journey through Anatolia) is offered every other summer. Below is the basic information for the Summer 2012 trip to Turkey. There is also a link to a PDF with this information at the bottom of the page.
Class Size Limit:
- Ten students total
Prerequisites:
- Junior Standing
- Completion of second English class (WA, W1)
- At least six credits of art classes
The Complete Program:
- ART 4635 (discusses culture, language, history, materials, itinerary, etc)
- 1 credit prep class
- during the spring semester 2012
- (required)
- ART 4650 – A Creative Journey through Anatolia (Turkey)
- 3 credits
- Four weeks
- Usually from May 12 to June 10 or so
- ART 4670 (to create a body of work in response to the trip)
- 1 credit conclusion class (and group exhibition)
- during the fall semester 2012
- (optional)
The Cost:
- Usually around $4000 for the month. But students in the past have received from $1000 to $2500 in scholarships. We will talk about this in the fall and spring. (…there is also a $350 or so fee for 3 UW credits…)
What the money pays for:
- Round trip tickets from Denver to Turkey
- All hotels and accommodations
- Breakfast and one other group meal every day
- Mini-bus and bus driver (and his accommodations and food)
- All fuel, taxes, tolls, parking, etc
- All entrance fees to museums, sites, etc
- All public transport in Istanbul
Course Description:
- A four week course abroad exploring the cultural, historical, artistic, archeological, and linguistic experiences present in Turkey. General areas to be explored are Istanbul, the Aegean coast and the southwestern Mediterranean coast including the ancient Greek sites of Ephesus, Priene, Miletus among others. Students will document their experiences through sketchbooks, journals, and photographs. Emphasis will be on using this experience to develop a creative and individual response to Turkey through written and visual methods of expression.
Deadlines and timeframe:
- Registration for the spring prep class is the first step. Recruitment for the class starts now and continues through the fall semester.
- First payment of $500 due usually in December of 2011.
- Two more payments of $2000 and $1500 due during the spring semester.
